In 1927 Sherman Fairchild began the development of the airport which opened to operations in 1928 as Fairchild Flying Field.

Over the next 60 years, various military manufacturers made Republic their home.

By WWII Republic Aviation was producing military aircraft at the field.

Most notable of which was the P-47 Thunderbolt or Jug… the largest, heaviest most durable fighter to see action in the war, with 15,686 aircraft that ultimately saw service. The Thunderbolt proved to be effective in both air combat and ground attack roles. The Jug earned a reputation as a big rugged fighter that could endure considerable damage and still bring its pilot home.

1969 the MTA purchased the airport, and operated it 14 years before transferring it to New York State Department of Transportation. In over 40 years of government ownership, the Airport’s primary function… as defined by the Transfer Legislation has been:

“to meet present and future needs with efficient air transportation and to promote the economic development and well being of the State.”

Today after 81 years of continuous operation Republic Airport is a vital transportation asset owned by the State of New York for the benefit of the people of New York.
